Audio Tour Accessibility Checklist for Museums and Attractions
Accessibility is more than volume control. It includes text, navigation, images, signage and the visitor’s ability to understand and follow the route.
# Audio Tour Accessibility Checklist for Museums and Attractions
An accessible audio tour offers more than one way to reach the same content. It supports disabled visitors as well as anyone using a phone in a noisy space or with limited connectivity.
Content
- Provide a full transcript for every audio track.
- Add captions to videos.
- Use clear language and explain specialist terms.
- Include audio description when an image or object is essential to understanding.
- Show the duration before visitors start listening.
Interface
- Use sufficient contrast between text and background.
- Make controls large enough for mobile use.
- Give audio controls explicit names.
- Test keyboard navigation and screen-reader labels.
- Do not rely on colour alone to communicate information.
Signage and routes
The QR code should have a short, readable instruction beside it. Place it where visitors can reach and view it from different heights and angles. Provide a short backup URL for people who cannot scan.
Testing
Test the route with people who have different needs. Check readability in sunlight, performance on a weak connection, transcript clarity and whether interrupted audio can be resumed.
Accessibility belongs in the writing and planning stage, not as an afterthought. It usually improves the experience for every visitor.
