QR Code or Native App for a Cultural Visit?

Choosing between a native app and a QR-code visit depends on the route, budget, connectivity and level of personalisation required.

# QR Code or Native App for a Cultural Visit?

Cultural organisations often have to choose between a native app that visitors download and an experience opened directly from a phone camera. The right answer starts with the use case.

The QR-code advantage

A QR code removes friction: visitors scan, choose a language and begin. They do not need to search for an app, create an account or free storage on their phone. This works especially well for occasional visitors, international tourists and venues that want to launch a route quickly.

What a native app adds

A native app can provide advanced features such as offline downloads, notifications, continuous location services or an ongoing relationship with visitors. It also requires more development, maintenance and promotion. Downloading is an additional step before the first story can be heard.

Compare the real cost

Do not compare only the initial build price. Include content production, iOS and Android updates, device compatibility, translation, support and printed signage. A mobile web experience avoids part of this cost while remaining easy to update.

A hybrid approach

For many museums, the best balance is a mobile web route opened through QR codes and optionally installable as a Progressive Web App. The content remains immediate, while returning visitors can keep a shortcut.

Before deciding, test the route with someone unfamiliar with your organisation. Measure the time from scan to first reading or listen: it is often the clearest simplicity metric.
